Coccidiosis is a parasitic infection of the intestinal tract caused by single-celled organisms known as coccidia, primarily from the genera Isospora and Eimeria in cats. These microscopic protozoan parasites invade and reproduce within the cells lining the intestinal walls, causing varying degrees of gastrointestinal distress. While coccidiosis can affect cats of any age, it is most commonly diagnosed in kittens and young cats, particularly those living in crowded or unsanitary conditions such as shelters, catteries, or multi-cat households. The infection is relatively common in the feline population, with many adult cats carrying low levels of the parasite without showing clinical signs.
The infection occurs when cats ingest sporulated oocysts from contaminated environments, typically through contact with infected feces or contaminated food and water sources. Once ingested, the parasites undergo a complex life cycle within the intestinal cells, reproducing rapidly and causing cellular damage along the way. The severity of infection depends largely on the number of oocysts ingested, the immune status of the cat, and whether concurrent infections or stressors are present. Environmental contamination plays a significant role in transmission, as oocysts can survive for extended periods in moist, warm conditions.
The impact of coccidiosis on a cat's health ranges from subclinical infection with no apparent symptoms to severe, life-threatening illness in young or immunocompromised individuals. Affected cats may experience significant gastrointestinal upset including diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and weight loss. In severe cases, particularly in kittens, the infection can cause bloody diarrhea, significant fluid loss, and secondary bacterial infections that may prove fatal without prompt treatment. The condition significantly affects quality of life during active infection, causing discomfort, lethargy, and poor appetite.
Fortunately, coccidiosis is highly treatable when diagnosed early and managed appropriately with antiprotozoal medications. Most cats respond well to treatment within one to two weeks, though environmental decontamination is equally important to prevent reinfection. Early detection through fecal examination is crucial, especially in kittens or cats showing signs of gastrointestinal illness. Veterinary care is essential not only for proper diagnosis and treatment but also to rule out other potential causes of similar symptoms and to address any complications such as dehydration or secondary infections.
