Cheyletiellosis, commonly known as walking dandruff, is a highly contagious skin condition caused by infestation with Cheyletiella mites, tiny parasites that live on the surface of the skin and feed on keratin and tissue fluids. The distinctive name walking dandruff comes from the characteristic appearance of large, white, flaky scales along the back that appear to move when observed closely, due to the motion of the mites beneath them. This condition affects cats of all ages and breeds but is particularly common in young cats, cats from multi-animal environments such as shelters and catteries, and cats living with infested dogs or rabbits. While rarely serious, cheyletiellosis causes significant discomfort and can spread to other pets and humans in the household.
The Cheyletiella mite responsible for feline cheyletiellosis is primarily Cheyletiella blakei, though cats can also be affected by species primarily associated with dogs (Cheyletiella yasguri) and rabbits (Cheyletiella parasitovorax). These mites complete their entire life cycle on the host animal, progressing through egg, larval, nymphal, and adult stages over approximately three weeks. Unlike some other skin parasites, Cheyletiella mites live on the skin surface rather than burrowing into it, making them relatively easier to treat once diagnosed. The mites cannot complete their life cycle off the host but can survive in the environment for up to ten days, contributing to reinfection risk.
The significance of cheyletiellosis extends beyond the affected cat to include public health implications, as Cheyletiella mites are zoonotic and can cause skin irritation in humans who contact infested animals. Human infestation is typically self-limiting since the mites cannot reproduce on humans, but causes itchy red papules and discomfort until the source of infestation is eliminated. The highly contagious nature of this condition means that identification in one pet should prompt examination and treatment of all in-contact animals. Household environmental treatment is also necessary to eliminate mites surviving off-host.
The prognosis for cheyletiellosis is excellent with appropriate treatment, as the mites respond well to various antiparasitic medications available for use in cats. Most cats experience complete resolution of symptoms within weeks of starting treatment. Challenges in management relate primarily to ensuring all in-contact animals are treated simultaneously, adequately addressing environmental contamination, and completing the full treatment course to eliminate all life stages of the mite. Recurrence is common when treatment is incomplete or environmental decontamination is neglected. Working with a veterinarian ensures appropriate treatment selection and comprehensive management.
