Anterior uveitis, also known as iridocyclitis, is inflammation of the front portion of the uveal tract in cats' eyes. The uveal tract consists of the iris, the colored part of the eye that controls pupil size, and the ciliary body, which produces the fluid that fills the eye and helps focus vision. When these structures become inflamed, it causes pain, vision changes, and potentially serious complications if not treated promptly. Anterior uveitis is one of the most common serious eye conditions affecting cats and can occur at any age in any breed.
The causes of anterior uveitis in cats are diverse and include infectious diseases, immune-mediated conditions, trauma, and tumors. Infectious causes include feline leukemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus, feline infectious peritonitis, toxoplasmosis, and various bacterial and fungal infections. In many cases, despite thorough diagnostic testing, no specific cause can be identified, and these cases are termed idiopathic uveitis. Identifying the underlying cause is important for appropriate treatment and determining prognosis.
Anterior uveitis significantly impacts a cat's comfort and vision. The inflammation causes pain that may manifest as squinting, tearing, light sensitivity, and behavioral changes. The inflamed iris cannot control pupil size normally, and the pupil typically becomes constricted and unresponsive to light changes. Vision may be impaired due to cloudiness within the eye from inflammatory cells and protein leaking into the aqueous humor. Without treatment, anterior uveitis can lead to serious complications including glaucoma, cataracts, lens luxation, and permanent vision loss.
Prompt diagnosis and treatment of anterior uveitis are essential for preserving vision and preventing complications. Treatment typically involves anti-inflammatory medications applied topically to the eye and sometimes given systemically. The underlying cause, when identified, must also be addressed. With appropriate treatment, many cats with anterior uveitis can recover good vision and comfort, though some cases become chronic or recurrent and require ongoing management. Regular veterinary care and owner vigilance in recognizing early signs are critical for optimal outcomes.
