Acute kidney injury, also known as acute renal failure, is a sudden and severe decline in kidney function that develops over hours to days in cats. Unlike chronic kidney disease, which progresses slowly over months or years, acute kidney injury represents a medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary intervention. This condition occurs when the kidneys suddenly lose their ability to filter waste products from the blood, regulate fluid balance, and maintain electrolyte equilibrium. Acute kidney injury can affect cats of any age, breed, or health status, though certain exposures and underlying conditions significantly increase risk.
The causes of acute kidney injury in cats are varied and include toxic ingestion, urinary tract obstruction, severe dehydration, infections, and reduced blood flow to the kidneys. Among the most common causes is ingestion of nephrotoxic substances, with lily plant exposure being particularly dangerous for cats and capable of causing complete kidney failure within twenty-four to seventy-two hours. Antifreeze containing ethylene glycol is another frequent cause of fatal acute kidney injury in cats. Urinary obstruction, particularly in male cats, prevents urine excretion and causes toxic waste buildup that damages the kidneys. Certain medications, infections, and underlying diseases can also precipitate acute kidney failure.
Acute kidney injury has devastating effects on a cat's health, affecting virtually every organ system as toxins accumulate in the bloodstream. Cats with AKI become severely ill very quickly, often showing signs of vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, and changes in urination within hours of the initial insult. The accumulation of uremic toxins affects the brain, causing neurological symptoms such as disorientation, weakness, and seizures in severe cases. Without treatment, acute kidney injury is frequently fatal, making recognition of early warning signs and immediate veterinary care absolutely critical for survival.
Despite its severity, acute kidney injury can be survivable with prompt, aggressive treatment. Unlike the permanent damage of chronic kidney disease, the kidneys may recover substantial function if the underlying cause is addressed quickly and supportive care is provided during the healing period. Treatment typically involves hospitalization for intensive intravenous fluid therapy, medications to control complications, and sometimes dialysis in specialized facilities. The prognosis depends heavily on the cause, severity of damage, how quickly treatment begins, and whether urine production can be restored. Early intervention dramatically improves survival odds, underscoring why any cat showing sudden signs of illness should receive immediate veterinary evaluation.
