West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause severe neurological disease in birds, particularly affecting the brain and spinal cord. While the virus can infect many bird species, it causes particularly devastating neurological symptoms in corvids (crows, ravens, jays) and some raptor species. Birds with neurological West Nile Virus often show sudden onset of severe symptoms and may deteriorate rapidly.
The prognosis for birds with neurological West Nile Virus is generally poor, as there is no specific antiviral treatment available. Care focuses on supportive measures to maintain hydration, nutrition, and comfort while the bird's immune system attempts to clear the infection. Prevention through mosquito control is the most effective approach to protecting birds from this serious disease. Bird owners in areas with West Nile Virus activity should take precautions to minimize mosquito exposure, particularly during peak mosquito season.
