Tumors affecting this organ can be primary, originating from splenic tissue itself, or secondary, representing metastatic spread from tumors elsewhere in the body. Common tumor types affecting the avian spleen include hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, and various carcinomas, with the specific type significantly influencing prognosis and treatment options.
The development of splenic tumors involves the uncontrolled proliferation of cells within the spleen. Hemangiosarcoma arises from the blood vessel lining cells within the spleen and is particularly aggressive, with a high tendency for bleeding and metastasis. Lymphoma, a cancer of lymphoid tissue, frequently involves the spleen as part of more widespread disease affecting multiple organs. The causes of splenic tumors remain incompletely understood, but factors such as chronic infection, immune system dysfunction, genetic predisposition, and age-related cellular changes likely contribute. Budgerigars and cockatiels appear to have increased susceptibility to splenic and other internal tumors compared to many other bird species.
The impact of splenic tumors on a bird's health can be profound and may develop insidiously over time. Because the spleen is involved in immune function, tumors affecting this organ may compromise the bird's ability to fight infections. Splenic masses can cause abdominal enlargement and may compress surrounding organs. Hemangiosarcoma carries particular risk of sudden internal bleeding, which can be rapidly life-threatening. Birds with splenic tumors often experience progressive weakness, weight loss, and general decline in condition. The internal location of the spleen means that tumors may grow substantially before external signs become apparent, making early detection challenging.
Treatment options for splenic tumors depend significantly on tumor type, size, and whether spread to other organs has occurred. Surgical removal of the spleen, called splenectomy, may be curative for some benign tumors and certain localized malignancies. Birds can survive without a spleen, though they may have increased susceptibility to certain infections. For tumors that cannot be surgically removed or have already spread, treatment focuses on palliative care to maintain comfort and quality of life. Chemotherapy may be considered for some tumor types, particularly lymphoma. Early detection through regular avian veterinary examinations offers the best opportunity for successful intervention, emphasizing the importance of routine health monitoring for all pet birds.
