Scaly legs is a common term used to describe the characteristic crusting, thickening, and distortion of the leg scales that develops when burrowing mites of the genus Knemidokoptes infest the tarsometatarsal region of a bird's legs. The condition derives its name from the dramatic alteration in the appearance of the normally smooth, overlapping scales that sheath the shank, which become lifted, roughened, and coated with a chalky or powdery encrustation as the mite population expands within the keratinized tissue. Historically one of the best-recognized parasitic ailments in domestic poultry, scaly legs has been documented in veterinary literature for well over a century and continues to be encountered regularly in backyard chicken flocks, aviary collections, and companion bird households worldwide.
The condition is overwhelmingly associated with poultry, where Knemidokoptes mutans is the principal causative species, though related mite species produce analogous leg lesions in passerines, psittacines, and wild birds. In chickens, the large, prominent scales of the shank provide a visually striking canvas on which the progressive mite-driven changes are readily observed, making the condition easier to identify in this species than in smaller birds where the leg scales are proportionally tiny. The colloquial name lime legs, used by poultry keepers in some regions, refers to the chalky white appearance of the encrusted shanks that superficially resembles a coating of whitewash or lime.
While scaly legs specifically describes the involvement of the tarsometatarsal region, the infestation frequently extends to the toes and digital scales, and in psittacines may occur concurrently with facial involvement. The condition belongs to a spectrum of Knemidokoptes-driven disease that includes scaly face, scaly foot, and the advanced proliferative endpoint sometimes termed tassel foot. Each of these presentations reflects the same underlying parasitic process occurring in different anatomical regions, though the relative frequency and clinical significance of leg involvement varies across species. In poultry, the legs are the primary and often the sole site of involvement, whereas in budgerigars, leg lesions typically accompany the more prominent facial presentation.
The condition is entirely preventable through good husbandry practices and entirely treatable with modern antiparasitic medications when identified early. Its persistence in modern aviculture stems largely from the insidious onset of early-stage disease, the ease with which subclinical infestations pass undetected between birds, and, in some cases, a cultural acceptance among poultry keepers that rough, crusty leg scales are a normal consequence of aging rather than an addressable parasitic condition. Correcting this misconception through education and promoting routine leg inspection as a standard husbandry practice are among the most effective strategies for reducing the prevalence of scaly legs in managed bird populations.
