Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD) is a devastating and ultimately fatal viral disease that affects the nervous system and gastrointestinal tract of birds, primarily psittacines (parrots). The condition is caused by Avian Bornavirus (ABV), which was definitively identified as the causative agent in 2008 after decades of research into this mysterious illness. PDD is one of the most significant health threats facing captive parrot populations worldwide, and it has been documented in over 80 species of psittacine birds. The disease was originally called Macaw Wasting Disease due to its devastating effects on macaw populations in the 1970s and 1980s, but it is now known to affect a wide variety of parrot species with varying degrees of severity.
The disease develops when Avian Bornavirus infects nerve cells throughout the body, causing inflammation and destruction of the ganglia (nerve clusters) that control the gastrointestinal tract and other organ systems. This viral infection leads to progressive neurological damage that impairs the bird's ability to properly digest and move food through the digestive system. The proventriculus, which is the glandular stomach of birds, becomes dilated and loses its ability to function normally, leading to maldigestion and malabsorption of nutrients. The ventriculus (muscular stomach or gizzard) may also be affected, further compromising digestive function.
The impact of PDD on affected birds is profound and far-reaching. Birds with this condition progressively lose the ability to digest food properly, leading to severe weight loss despite maintaining a normal or even increased appetite. The neurological effects can extend beyond the digestive system, causing a range of symptoms including seizures, ataxia (loss of coordination), paralysis, and behavioral changes. The disease typically progresses over weeks to months, with affected birds gradually declining in condition. Quality of life deteriorates as the bird becomes increasingly unable to maintain adequate nutrition and experiences neurological complications that affect mobility and daily functioning.
Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for Proventricular Dilatation Disease. Treatment is limited to supportive care aimed at managing symptoms and maintaining quality of life for as long as possible. Some birds may respond to anti-inflammatory medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or COX-2 inhibitors, which can help reduce the inflammation caused by the viral infection and slow disease progression. Early detection through testing for Avian Bornavirus is crucial for managing the spread of the disease in multi-bird households and aviaries. Bird owners who suspect their bird may have PDD should seek immediate evaluation from an experienced avian veterinarian, as prompt supportive care can significantly impact the bird's comfort and survival time.
