Liver disease, various infections, toxicities including heavy metal poisoning, and endocrine disorders can all cause increased drinking. High dietary salt intake can physiologically increase thirst. The key differentiating factor is that psychogenic polydipsia occurs in birds with normal medical workup results and with behavioral or environmental risk factors, while medical polydipsia is associated with underlying disease processes detectable on examination and testing.

Potential complications of untreated psychogenic polydipsia include potential disruption of electrolyte balance and kidney function if severe and prolonged, though many birds tolerate chronic excessive water intake without obvious medical consequences. The constant wet droppings create hygiene challenges and can lead to skin irritation if the bird sits in wet substrate. Nutritional status may suffer if the bird's focus on drinking displaces normal eating behavior. Secondary behavioral problems may develop or worsen if the underlying psychological causes are not addressed. The quality of life impact of spending significant time engaged in purposeless drinking behavior is also a concern. Early intervention prevents these complications and addresses the underlying welfare concerns driving the behavior.
