Salmonellosis, commonly known as paratyphoid in pigeon circles, is one of the most significant bacterial diseases affecting domestic and feral pigeons worldwide. This infection is caused by Salmonella enterica, most commonly the subspecies Salmonella typhimurium var. Copenhagen, which has become specifically adapted to pigeons over time. The disease manifests in multiple forms, affecting the intestinal tract, joints, reproductive system, and potentially multiple internal organs, making it one of the most versatile and challenging bacterial infections encountered in pigeon medicine. Salmonellosis represents a constant concern for pigeon keepers due to its prevalence, persistence in carrier birds, potential severity, and zoonotic implications.
Salmonella bacteria are transmitted through the fecal-oral route, with infected birds shedding organisms in their droppings that contaminate food, water, and the loft environment. The bacteria can persist in the environment for extended periods, particularly in moist conditions, remaining infectious for weeks to months. Vertical transmission from infected parents to offspring occurs both through egg contamination and during feeding of young squabs. Carrier birds that appear healthy but intermittently shed bacteria play a crucial role in maintaining the infection within pigeon populations, making complete eradication from infected flocks extremely difficult.
The clinical impact of salmonellosis varies considerably depending on the form of disease that develops. Intestinal salmonellosis causes diarrhea, weight loss, and dehydration. Joint involvement leads to painful swelling and lameness that can be severely debilitating. Reproductive tract infection causes infertility, embryo death, and dead-in-shell losses. Systemic infection affecting multiple organs can prove rapidly fatal, particularly in young birds or immunocompromised individuals. Subclinical carriers may show no obvious symptoms but experience reduced performance and serve as ongoing sources of infection for loftmates.
Treatment of salmonellosis involves antibiotic therapy guided by culture and sensitivity testing, along with supportive care for severely affected birds. However, treatment decisions must consider that antibiotic therapy may eliminate clinical disease while creating long-term carriers that continue shedding bacteria intermittently. Prevention through excellent hygiene, stress reduction, and careful management represents the most effective approach to controlling this persistent pathogen. Working closely with an avian veterinarian experienced in pigeon medicine is essential for developing effective control strategies and making appropriate treatment decisions.
