Unlike more localized infections such as conjunctivitis or keratitis, panophthalmitis indicates that infection has extended beyond individual structures to involve the entire globe, making it a true ophthalmic emergency requiring immediate, aggressive intervention.
The condition typically develops as a progression from more localized infections that were either untreated or inadequately treated, or as a result of penetrating trauma that introduces infectious organisms directly into the eye's interior. Hematogenous spread from systemic infections represents another important route by which pathogens can reach the eye, meaning that panophthalmitis may sometimes be the first visible sign of a serious underlying systemic disease. In birds, the highly vascular nature of ocular tissues and the close anatomical relationships between different structures facilitate rapid spread of infection once it gains entry to the eye.
The impact of panophthalmitis on affected birds is profound and potentially devastating. The condition causes severe pain, complete loss of vision in the affected eye, and significant systemic illness as the body mounts an intense inflammatory response to the overwhelming infection. Birds may become critically ill, showing signs of systemic sepsis if the infection spreads beyond the eye.
