Predisposing factors include previous reproductive disease, chronic egg laying that may cause tissue damage, nutritional deficiencies affecting immune function, and general immunosuppression from stress or concurrent illness. The impact of oophoritis on bird health ranges from mild localized inflammation to life-threatening systemic infection. Localized oophoritis may cause ovarian enlargement, pain, and dysfunction without major systemic effects initially. However, the rich blood supply to the ovary facilitates spread of infection into the bloodstream, potentially causing septicemia. Chronic oophoritis can lead to ovarian abscess formation, adhesions affecting adjacent organs, and progressive destruction of functional ovarian tissue. Reproductive function is typically impaired, with affected birds showing decreased or abnormal egg production. The inflammatory process may spread to involve the oviduct and coelomic cavity, causing more extensive disease.
Treatment for oophoritis depends on the severity and extent of infection. Medical management with antimicrobial therapy appropriate for the causative organism is the first-line treatment for uncomplicated cases. Supportive care including fluid therapy, nutritional support, and pain management aids recovery. Surgical intervention may be necessary for cases with abscess formation, when medical therapy fails, or to prevent recurrence through removal of affected tissue.
