This condition occurs when yolk material from developing or ruptured eggs enters the abdominal cavity (coelomic cavity in birds), triggering an intense inflammatory response. The yolk acts as a foreign substance within the body, causing severe inflammation, fluid accumulation, and often secondary bacterial infection. In its acute form, egg yolk peritonitis can progress from initial symptoms to life-threatening illness within hours to days. All female birds capable of reproduction are at risk, with chronic egg layers facing the highest probability of developing this devastating condition.
The causes of egg yolk peritonitis relate to disruption of normal egg production and passage. When follicles (developing yolks) rupture prematurely or fail to enter the oviduct properly, yolk spills into the coelomic cavity. This can occur due to ectopic ovulation, oviductal dysfunction, trauma during egg formation, or reverse peristalsis that propels yolk backward. Additionally, egg binding can lead to peritonitis if the retained egg ruptures. The bird's body mounts a vigorous inflammatory response to the yolk material, which is rich in proteins and fats that irritate the peritoneal lining. Bacteria often colonize the yolk material, transforming sterile inflammation into septic peritonitis.
The impact of egg yolk peritonitis on a bird's health is profound and multisystemic. The inflammatory response causes abdominal distension, pain, and pressure on other organs. Fluid accumulation may compress air sacs, causing respiratory distress. Toxins from inflammation and infection affect multiple organ systems. The bird experiences significant suffering, with loss of appetite, lethargy, and progressive weakness. If infection develops, sepsis can spread throughout the body. Without treatment, organ failure and death are typical outcomes. Even with treatment, severely affected birds may not survive, making this condition one of the most challenging reproductive emergencies in avian medicine.
Egg yolk peritonitis is treatable when recognized early and managed aggressively, but outcomes depend heavily on the severity at presentation and whether sepsis has developed. Treatment typically involves intensive supportive care, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, and often surgical intervention to remove accumulated yolk material and address the underlying reproductive pathology. Many avian veterinarians recommend salpingohysterectomy (removal of the reproductive tract) as definitive treatment when the bird is stable enough for surgery. Early recognition of subtle signs and prompt veterinary care offer the best chance of survival. Prevention through management of chronic egg laying is essential for at-risk birds.
