Egg peritonitis, also known as yolk coelomitis or egg yolk peritonitis, is a serious and potentially life-threatening inflammatory condition that occurs when egg yolk material accumulates in the coelomic cavity of female birds. This condition represents one of the most common reproductive emergencies encountered in avian medicine and carries significant morbidity and mortality if not diagnosed and treated promptly. The presence of yolk material outside the reproductive tract triggers a severe inflammatory response that can progress to systemic illness, organ damage, and death. Egg peritonitis affects both pet birds and production poultry, though the presentation, management, and prognosis differ somewhat between these populations. Among companion birds, chronic egg layers including cockatiels, budgerigars, lovebirds, and canaries face the highest risk.
The underlying mechanism of egg peritonitis involves the escape of yolk material into the coelomic cavity through various pathways. Under normal circumstances, the mature yolk is released from the ovary and captured by the infundibulum, the funnel-shaped opening of the oviduct, to begin its journey through the reproductive tract. When this process fails, whether due to reverse peristalsis, oviduct dysfunction, ovulation into the body cavity rather than the oviduct, or rupture of an egg within the reproductive tract, yolk material ends up free in the coelom. The body recognizes this ectopic yolk as foreign material and mounts an inflammatory response. Bacteria may colonize the nutrient-rich yolk, leading to infection and sepsis. The resulting combination of inflammation and infection causes rapid deterioration in affected birds.
The impact of egg peritonitis on bird health can be devastating, affecting multiple organ systems and causing systemic illness. The inflammatory response triggered by free yolk material causes fluid accumulation in the body cavity, creating pressure on surrounding organs including the liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, and air sacs. This pressure compromises organ function and impairs breathing. If bacterial infection develops, toxins produced by bacteria enter the bloodstream and cause septicemia, which can rapidly progress to shock and death. The liver, already stressed by the demands of yolk production, may become further compromised by inflammation and infection. Adhesions may form between abdominal organs, causing long-term complications even if the acute crisis is survived. The cumulative effect of these insults makes egg peritonitis a true medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary attention.
Treatment of egg peritonitis requires aggressive intervention including antibiotics, supportive care, and often surgical drainage of accumulated yolk and inflammatory material. The prognosis depends heavily on how quickly treatment is initiated and the severity of illness at presentation. Birds that receive prompt veterinary care have reasonable chances of recovery, though the condition is serious and outcomes are not guaranteed. Prevention focuses on reducing chronic egg laying through environmental and dietary management, which decreases the frequency of ovulation and associated risk of yolk misplacement. For bird owners, understanding the risk factors, recognizing early warning signs, and seeking immediate veterinary care when symptoms develop are critical for giving affected birds the best possible chance of survival.
