Pendulous crop, sometimes referred to as sour crop or crop atony, is a condition in birds characterized by abnormal stretching and loss of muscular tone in the crop, leading to impaired digestive function. The crop, a muscular pouch at the base of the neck that serves as a food storage organ, becomes distended, flaccid, and hangs lower than normal. This structural change prevents the crop from contracting effectively to move food into the proventriculus for digestion. The condition is most commonly seen in hand-fed baby birds that have been overfed, but can also develop in adult birds following repeated episodes of crop stasis or impaction.
The development of pendulous crop typically occurs gradually as the muscular walls of the crop are stretched beyond their ability to return to normal size. In healthy birds, the crop muscles contract rhythmically to mix food and propel it forward through the digestive system. When the crop is repeatedly overfilled or when food remains in the crop too long, the muscle fibers become stretched and weakened. Over time, the crop loses its ability to generate effective contractions, and food accumulates and ferments rather than moving through the digestive tract normally. This fermentation process leads to the sour smell and altered pH that gives the condition its common name of sour crop.
The impact of pendulous crop on a bird's health ranges from moderate to severe depending on the degree of crop dysfunction. Mildly affected birds may experience chronic slow crop emptying and occasional regurgitation, while severely affected individuals can suffer from malnutrition, recurrent infections, and poor quality of life. The condition creates a self-perpetuating cycle where impaired motility leads to food stagnation, which causes fermentation and bacterial or yeast overgrowth, which further damages the crop lining and worsens motility. Without intervention, the bird's condition typically deteriorates over time.
Treatment for pendulous crop depends on the severity and may range from medical management to surgical correction. Mild cases may be managed with dietary modifications, feeding technique changes, and supportive care. More severe cases often require surgical reduction of the crop, a procedure called crop resection or crop plication, to restore normal size and function. Early intervention improves outcomes, and bird owners should be aware that any history of crop problems increases the risk of developing pendulous crop.
