Crop mycosis, commonly known as candidiasis or thrush, is a fungal infection of the crop and sometimes the oral cavity in birds caused primarily by the yeast organism Candida albicans. This opportunistic pathogen is normally present in small numbers in the digestive tract of many birds, but under certain conditions it can proliferate excessively, causing clinical disease. Crop mycosis is one of the most frequently diagnosed fungal infections in captive birds, particularly affecting young hand-fed chicks and birds whose immune systems are compromised by stress, illness, or improper husbandry.
The condition develops when the natural balance of microorganisms in the digestive tract is disrupted, allowing Candida organisms to multiply unchecked. This disruption can occur for numerous reasons, including antibiotic use that eliminates competing bacteria, poor hygiene practices during hand-feeding, immunosuppression from concurrent illness or stress, and environmental factors such as excessive heat or humidity. The warm, moist, nutrient-rich environment of the crop provides ideal conditions for yeast growth once the normal microbial balance is disturbed.
Crop mycosis significantly impacts affected birds' ability to digest and process food normally. The fungal overgrowth damages the delicate lining of the crop and can spread to the oral cavity, esophagus, and other parts of the digestive system. Affected birds often experience decreased appetite, regurgitation, and weight loss. In severe cases, the thickened crop lining impairs normal motility, leading to crop stasis. Young birds are particularly vulnerable and can decline rapidly without treatment, as they depend on properly functioning digestive systems for the frequent feedings they require.
Fortunately, crop mycosis is treatable with appropriate antifungal medications when diagnosed promptly. Treatment typically involves oral antifungal drugs such as nystatin or fluconazole, along with correction of any underlying factors that contributed to the infection. Early detection and treatment significantly improve outcomes, while delayed treatment can result in severe damage to the digestive tract and potentially life-threatening complications. Bird owners should be aware of the risk factors for crop mycosis and seek veterinary attention at the first signs of digestive abnormalities, particularly in young or immunocompromised birds.
