Cloacal prolapse is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in female birds where internal tissues protrude through the cloacal opening, also known as the vent. This emergency situation occurs when the cloaca, oviduct, or portions of the intestinal tract evert through the vent and become visible externally. The prolapsed tissue appears as a red or pink mass protruding from the bird's rear end and requires immediate veterinary attention to prevent tissue death, infection, and fatal complications. While cloacal prolapse can affect any bird, it is particularly common in reproductively active females, especially those that lay eggs chronically or experience egg-laying difficulties.
The causes of cloacal prolapse in female birds are multifactorial but primarily relate to reproductive activity and the strain of egg production and laying. Chronic egg-laying depletes calcium reserves, weakens the muscles of the reproductive tract, and subjects the cloaca to repeated stretching. Dystocia, or egg-binding, causes prolonged straining that can lead to prolapse. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly of calcium and vitamin D, weaken the tissues and muscles involved in egg-laying. Infections of the reproductive tract, masses, and other conditions affecting the cloaca also predispose to prolapse. In many cases, multiple factors combine to cause this condition.
The impact of cloacal prolapse on affected birds is severe and demands urgent intervention. Exposed tissues rapidly become swollen, traumatized, and necrotic if not treated promptly. Birds with prolapse cannot defecate normally, leading to toxin buildup. The prolapsed tissue is extremely painful and causes significant distress. Other birds in the environment may peck at the exposed tissue, causing further damage and hemorrhage. Without treatment, cloacal prolapse is invariably fatal, making this a true avian emergency that cannot wait for routine veterinary appointments.
Treatment of cloacal prolapse involves immediate stabilization, careful reduction of the prolapsed tissue back into proper position, and measures to prevent recurrence. Many birds require surgical intervention to repair damaged tissue and reinforce the cloacal opening. Long-term management addresses the underlying causes, particularly chronic egg-laying, through hormonal therapy and environmental modifications. With prompt and appropriate treatment, many birds survive cloacal prolapse and can go on to live good quality lives, though preventing recurrence requires ongoing attention to reproductive health management.
