Chlamydiosis, also commonly known as psittacosis, parrot fever, or ornithosis, is a serious bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia psittaci (formerly Chlamydophila psittaci) that affects the respiratory system and multiple organs in birds. This condition represents one of the most significant zoonotic diseases in avian medicine, meaning infected birds can transmit the disease to humans, causing potentially severe respiratory illness in people. The infection occurs worldwide and affects over four hundred fifty species of birds, though psittacines including parrots, cockatiels, and budgerigars, as well as pigeons and doves, show particularly high susceptibility. Chlamydiosis has important public health implications, and many jurisdictions have reporting requirements for confirmed cases.
The causative organism, Chlamydia psittaci, is an obligate intracellular bacterium, meaning it can only reproduce inside host cells. The bacteria primarily target respiratory epithelial cells but can spread to affect the liver, spleen, air sacs, and other organs. Transmission occurs primarily through inhalation of contaminated dust from dried feces, feather dander, and respiratory secretions from infected birds. The organism remains infectious in dried materials for extended periods, making environmental contamination a significant source of exposure. Birds may carry and shed the organism without showing obvious signs of illness, particularly during periods of stress, creating silent reservoirs of infection in avian populations.
The impact of chlamydiosis on affected birds ranges from subclinical infection with no apparent symptoms to severe systemic disease that can prove fatal without treatment. Infected birds commonly develop respiratory symptoms, conjunctivitis, liver and spleen enlargement, and generalized weakness. The disease often emerges during periods of stress such as shipping, rehoming, breeding, or concurrent illness, when birds that previously appeared healthy begin shedding organisms and developing clinical signs. Young birds typically experience more severe disease than adults, and mortality rates can be significant in untreated cases, particularly in outbreak situations affecting multiple birds simultaneously.
Treatment of chlamydiosis requires extended antibiotic therapy, typically with doxycycline, administered for a minimum of forty-five days to eliminate the intracellular organism. While treatment is generally successful when initiated appropriately, early detection presents challenges because birds instinctively hide illness and symptoms may be nonspecific initially. Working with a qualified avian veterinarian is essential for accurate diagnosis through specialized testing and for developing an appropriate treatment protocol. Due to the zoonotic nature of this disease, bird owners must take precautions to protect themselves and family members during treatment, and should be aware of their own health during and after exposure to infected birds.
