The unique respiratory physiology of birds, with their highly efficient air sac system and unidirectional airflow, makes them absorb gases more rapidly than mammals. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin with much greater affinity than oxygen, preventing the blood from carrying adequate oxygen to tissues.
The impact of carbon monoxide poisoning on birds is severe and often rapidly fatal. As carbon monoxide replaces oxygen in the bloodstream, tissues throughout the body become starved of oxygen. The brain and heart are particularly sensitive to oxygen deprivation and are affected early in the poisoning process. Birds may collapse and die within minutes of exposure to high concentrations, or may survive longer with lower-level exposures but still suffer serious organ damage. The speed of onset and potential for sudden death make this condition extremely dangerous.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is treatable if the bird is removed from exposure immediately and given supportive care including supplemental oxygen. However, the prognosis depends heavily on the duration and intensity of exposure, and permanent neurological damage can occur even in surviving birds. Prevention through proper maintenance of fuel-burning appliances and installation of carbon monoxide detectors is essential for protecting pet birds.
