Ascarids, commonly known as roundworms, are among the most prevalent internal parasites affecting pet and wild birds worldwide. These nematode parasites inhabit the gastrointestinal tract, primarily the small intestine, where they feed on intestinal contents and can cause significant health problems ranging from mild digestive disturbances to severe, life-threatening illness. Several species of ascarids affect birds, with Ascaridia species being the most common in psittacines and poultry, while Porrocaecum species commonly affect raptors and other wild birds. Roundworm infections, also called ascaridiasis, represent a significant concern for aviculturists, poultry producers, and pet bird owners alike.
Ascarid infections occur when birds ingest parasite eggs from contaminated environments, food, or water sources. Once ingested, the eggs hatch in the intestinal tract, and the larvae undergo a complex developmental process that may include migration through the liver and lungs before returning to the intestines to mature into adult worms. Adult ascarids are large parasites, with some species reaching several inches in length, making them easily visible to the naked eye if passed in droppings or observed during necropsy. The parasites reproduce within the host, with females producing thousands of eggs that are shed in the bird's droppings, contaminating the environment and perpetuating the cycle of infection.
The impact of roundworm infections on bird health depends on the parasite burden, the bird's age and immune status, and the duration of infection. Light infections may cause few noticeable symptoms, while heavy parasite loads can result in malnutrition, intestinal obstruction, and organ damage from larval migration. Young birds are particularly vulnerable to severe disease, as their developing immune systems are less able to control parasite populations, and the effects of nutrient competition and tissue damage are more pronounced in growing birds. Chronic infections can lead to poor growth, weakened immunity, and increased susceptibility to other diseases.
Treatment of ascarid infections in birds is generally successful when diagnosed early and managed appropriately. Effective anthelmintic medications are available that kill adult worms and, in some cases, larval stages as well. However, treatment success depends on accurate diagnosis, appropriate drug selection and dosing, and comprehensive environmental decontamination to prevent reinfection. Bird owners should work closely with an avian veterinarian to develop effective treatment and prevention protocols, as over-the-counter dewormers may be ineffective or potentially harmful if used incorrectly. With proper veterinary care and management, most birds recover fully from roundworm infections.
