Siamese Algae Eaters coexist successfully with a broad range of peaceful to moderately active community fish, making them versatile additions to diverse tank configurations. Ideal companions include small to medium-sized tetras, rasboras, danios, barbs, livebearers, gouramis, and rainbowfish that occupy the mid-water and surface zones, creating a layered community where the predominantly bottom-to-mid-dwelling Siamese Algae Eater fills a complementary spatial niche. Corydoras catfish, otocinclus, and bristlenose plecos share the bottom zone without significant territorial overlap, as their preferred microhabitats and feeding strategies differ enough to prevent meaningful competition.

Dwarf cichlids including Apistogramma and Mikrogeophagus species coexist with Siamese Algae Eaters in planted tanks where adequate territory and sight-line breaks prevent territorial friction. The key consideration is ensuring the cichlids are not small enough for the SAE to harass during feeding scrambles and that the cichlid's territorial defense does not produce sustained stress for the more mobile SAE passing through claimed zones. Shrimp compatibility follows a size-dependent logic: adult Amano Shrimp and larger Neocaridina are generally safe, while very small dwarf shrimp and freshly molted individuals may attract unwanted attention from adult Siamese Algae Eaters.

Species to avoid as tank mates include highly territorial bottom-dwellers like red-tail sharks, rainbow sharks, and large Botia loaches that contest the spatial niche Siamese Algae Eaters occupy and can produce sustained aggression that stresses the more peaceable SAE. Very small fish under an inch in length are not at direct predation risk from the herbivore-leaning SAE, but the size disparity and the SAE's boisterous swimming style can intimidate diminutive species into chronic hiding behavior. Long-finned varieties of bettas, angelfish, or fancy guppies should be monitored for fin-nipping from mature SAE, though this behavior is not universal and often does not manifest in well-fed, adequately spaced communities.

Breeding Siamese Algae Eaters in captivity represents one of the least-documented reproductive projects in mainstream aquarium fishkeeping. The species has been commercially bred for the ornamental trade, but the methods used by Asian fish farms have not been widely published or replicated by hobbyists. The presumed reproductive strategy involves egg scattering over vegetation or substrate in flowing water, consistent with the spawning behavior of related cyprinid species. The difficulty of reliable sex determination, combined with the absence of documented hobbyist breeding success, means that virtually all Siamese Algae Eaters in the trade originate from commercial breeding operations rather than home aquarist efforts.

The lack of captive breeding information does not diminish the species' value as a community aquarium resident, but it does mean that keepers should acquire specimens from reputable sources that maintain proper species identification protocols. The persistent mislabeling of flying fox species and Garra species as Siamese Algae Eaters at retail means that careful visual identification, particularly examining the lateral stripe extension into the caudal fin, the presence or absence of additional barbels, and the fin coloration patterns, remains essential at the point of purchase. A confidently identified, genuine Siamese Algae Eater represents an investment in both algae control and community compatibility that the lookalike species cannot consistently match.
