While all other clownfish belong to genus Amphiprion, the Maroon Clownfish's distinctive cheek spines earned it separate generic classification as Premnas. The species name biaculeatus references these twin spines, derived from Latin words meaning "two-spined." This unique anatomical feature provides an immediate identification characteristic separating Maroons from all Amphiprion species.
Common names for this species emphasize either coloration or distinctive morphology. Spine-Cheeked Clownfish or Spinecheek Anemonefish reference the prominent cheek spines. Maroon Clownfish and Maroon Anemonefish describe their deep burgundy to brick-red coloration. Regional variations include Gold-Striped Maroon Clownfish for specimens with yellow rather than white bands, and Lightning Maroon Clownfish for a captive-bred designer variant with irregular patterning.
Two primary color variants occur within the species. White-Striped Maroons display crisp white bands across their dark maroon bodies and typically originate from Indonesian populations.
