Among non-cichlid species, large plecos, synodontis catfish, silver dollars, and giant danios occupy different ecological niches within the aquarium and typically avoid direct territorial conflict with Green Terrors. Tinfoil barbs and larger rainbowfish can work as dither fish in spacious setups, their constant movement sometimes reducing cichlid-to-cichlid focus.

Species to strictly avoid include any fish small enough to fit in an adult Green Terror's mouth, which is considerably more capacious than casual observation suggests. Small tetras, guppies, dwarf cichlids, and juvenile fish of any species face inevitable predation. Excessively aggressive species such as large Midas cichlids, adult jaguar cichlids, or full-grown umbee cichlids may overwhelm Green Terrors and should be housed separately unless tanks of 300 gallons or more are available. Bottom-dwelling species with poor mobility or defensive capability, including most corydoras, fare poorly alongside Green Terrors.

Breeding Green Terrors in captivity is readily achievable and represents one of the more accessible large cichlid breeding experiences available to hobbyists. Pair formation occurs naturally when a compatible male and female are raised together or introduced in a neutral territory, though forced pairing of arbitrary individuals frequently results in aggression rather than bonding. Compatible pairs engage in mutual courtship displays including parallel swimming, substrate cleaning, and intensified coloration before the female deposits several hundred adhesive eggs on a previously cleaned flat surface such as a smooth stone or ceramic tile.

Parental care in Green Terrors follows the biparental substrate-spawning pattern characteristic of many South American cichlids. Both parents fan and mouth the eggs during the approximately three-day incubation period, removing infertile or fungused eggs to protect the clutch. Newly hatched larvae remain attached to the spawning substrate or are moved to pre-excavated pits in the substrate by the parents, who continue guarding them intensively. Free-swimming fry emerge roughly five to seven days after hatching and are shepherded in tight schools by both parents, who defend them vigorously against all perceived threats. First foods for fry include newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely crushed flake, with growth proceeding rapidly under adequate feeding and water quality conditions.
