Secure nighttime housing with solid walls, hardware cloth over openings, and predator-proof latches provides primary protection. Perimeter fencing should extend below ground or include barriers preventing digging predators from tunneling under fences. In areas with significant predator pressure, livestock guardian dogs, donkeys, or llamas offer additional protection for pastured goats.
Outdoor exercise areas should provide a minimum of 200 to 300 square feet per animal, with larger areas improving health and reducing boredom. Saanens benefit from climbing structures, platforms, and elevated resting areas that satisfy their natural climbing instincts and provide exercise. Adequate outdoor space becomes particularly important for this large breed to maintain body condition and prevent obesity that can complicate kidding and reduce milk production. Rotational grazing or browsing systems allow pasture recovery, improve forage utilization, and help manage parasite loads through exposure to fresh ground.
Saanen-specific infrastructure includes elevated feed and hay racks positioned to accommodate their tall stature while keeping feed clean. Water systems must provide constant access to clean, fresh water, with automatic waterers, frequent bucket changes, or large tanks preventing dehydration. Their high milk production creates substantial water requirements, particularly during summer heat. Milking facilities require solid construction to support the weight of large does, with milk stands at appropriate heights for comfortable milking and adequate lighting for observing udder health. Milk houses or designated areas for milk handling must meet sanitation standards for safe milk production.
Kidding areas need sufficient space for large does to kid comfortably, with clean, dry bedding and easy monitoring access for humans. Separate kidding stalls prevent interference from curious herd members and reduce disease transmission to newborns. Buck housing must be completely separate from doe areas to prevent unplanned breeding, positioned downwind where possible to minimize odor impact on does and milk. Secure gates and double-entry systems prevent accidental escapes during feeding or cleaning, as even calm Saanen bucks present management challenges during rut.
