Mixed grass-legume hays offer balanced nutrition. Hay should be free of mold, dust, and weeds, purchased from reliable sources and stored properly to maintain quality. Mules drink 8-12 gallons daily under normal conditions, with requirements increasing significantly during hot weather, strenuous work, or lactation. Unlike some horses that gulp water rapidly, mules often drink slowly and deliberately. However, they can be particular about water cleanliness and temperature. Tanks and automatic waterers should be scrubbed regularly to remove algae and sediment. In freezing weather, heated waterers or broken ice ensure adequate water consumption. Dehydration contributes to impaction colic and poor performance. Monitor water intake by noting tank levels daily, especially in winter when drinking often decreases.
Feeding management requires attention to individual needs and regular body condition assessment. Mules should maintain moderate body condition - ribs should be easily felt but not visible, and there should be fat covering over the spine and tailhead but not excessive fat deposits. Unlike horses that often show weight gain in specific areas, mules tend to gain or lose weight more uniformly. Obesity is less common in mules than horses but still occurs, particularly in idle animals on rich pasture with supplementary feeding. Obese mules face increased health risks including insulin resistance, laminitis, and joint stress. Conversely, underweight mules may have dental issues, parasite burdens, or insufficient feed quality or quantity.
