The term 'hinny' has unclear etymology, possibly deriving from the Greek 'gínos' or Latin 'hinnus' referring to these hybrids. Alternative regional names include 'bardot' (French), though this term may apply to both hinnies and mules depending on locale. English usage consistently employs 'hinny' for stallion-jenny offspring, with mule reserved for jack-mare crosses. Unlike mules which have been deliberately bred for millennia, hinnies are less commonly produced and often result from accidental breeding rather than intentional programs.
Hinnies are almost always sterile due to chromosomal incompatibility - horses have 64 chromosomes while donkeys have 62, giving hinnies an odd 63 chromosomes that cannot pair properly during meiosis. Extremely rare cases of fertile hinnies (particularly females) have been documented, but these represent exceptional anomalies rather than normal expectations.
