The Tibetan Terrier is a medium-sized dog that stands between 14 and 16 inches at the shoulder and typically weighs between 18 and 30 pounds, with 20 to 24 pounds being the preferred range for well-balanced specimens. Despite the name, this breed is not actually a terrier but earned the designation from European travelers who noted its size similarity to terrier breeds common in their homelands. The body is square in proportion, being approximately as long as it is tall, giving the breed a balanced, compact appearance that belies its surprising athleticism and agility developed in the rugged Himalayan terrain. These dogs are well-muscled beneath their abundant coat, presenting a powerful yet graceful silhouette. The Tibetan Terrier's most striking feature is its profuse double coat, which consists of a soft, woolly undercoat and a long, fine outer coat that can be either wavy or straight depending on individual genetics.
