Irish Boston Terrier

The Irish Terrier is a medium-sized terrier breed with a distinctive rectangular body shape that is noticeably longer than similar terrier breeds. Males and females both stand approximately 18 inches at the shoulder, with males ideally weighing around 27 pounds and females approximately 25 pounds. The breed presents an athletic, balanced appearance that conveys both symmetry and proportion while demonstrating remarkable agility. This terrier must be active, lithe, and wiry in movement, demonstrating great animation while maintaining sturdy bone structure without any clumsiness, as the breed requires speed, power, and endurance for its traditional working roles. The coat is one of the Irish Terrier's most recognizable features, consisting of a dense, wiry outer coat with a broken appearance that lies close to the body. The hair grows so tightly together that when parted with fingers, the skin is barely visible. Coat colors range from bright red and golden red to red wheaten, with solid, clear colors being preferred. A small patch of white on the chest is acceptable, though white markings elsewhere are considered a fault. The coat requires regular hand-stripping to maintain its proper harsh texture and neat appearance. The head is long and clean with a barely perceptible stop, featuring a flat skull that is fairly narrow between the ears and tapers slightly toward the eyes. The foreface is strong and well-chiseled without falling away under the eyes. The dark brown eyes are small, not prominent, and show an intense expression full of life, fire, and intelligence. The small V-shaped ears are of moderate thickness and fold forward close to the cheeks. The strong, muscular neck is of fair length and free from throatiness, leading to fine, long shoulders that slope well into the back. The chest is deep and muscular but neither full nor wide, with ribs that are deep rather than round and well-sprung.

The Boston Terrier is a small to medium-sized companion breed with a distinctive square, compact build that gives the appearance of determination, strength, and activity. The breed is divided into three weight classes: under 15 pounds, 15 to under 20 pounds, and 20 to 25 pounds, with height typically ranging from 15 to 17 inches at the shoulder. The body is short and well-knit, with a deep chest and a short, low-set tail that may be straight or screw-shaped. The legs are strong and neatly turned, set moderately wide apart to support the square body frame and provide good balance during movement. One of the Boston Terrier's most recognizable features is its brachycephalic head structure, characterized by a short, square skull with a flat top, broad muzzle, and pronounced stop. The large, round, dark eyes are set wide apart and convey an alert, kind, and intelligent expression that reflects the breed's friendly nature. The ears are small and carried erect, either naturally or cropped to a point. The jaw is broad and square with short, regular teeth that meet in an even or slightly undershot bite. The short muzzle is proportionate to the skull and free from wrinkles, though some wrinkling naturally occurs around the face. The smooth, short coat requires minimal grooming and lies flat against the body with a glossy sheen. The distinctive tuxedo-like markings are a hallmark of the breed, featuring a white muzzle band, white blaze between the eyes, white forechest, and ideally white on part or all of the forelegs and hind legs below the hocks. Base coat colors include black, brindle, or seal, which appears black but shows a red cast when viewed in sunlight. The contrast between the dark body color and white markings gives the Boston Terrier its gentlemanly appearance that earned the breed its American Gentleman nickname. The coat sheds minimally and stays clean with regular brushing.
