The training process requires patience, as most lorikeets initially resist the harness, but the majority can be acclimated over a period of weeks using gradual desensitization and heavy positive reinforcement.

Vocally, Rainbow Lorikeets are among the noisiest small to medium parrots, with a natural call repertoire dominated by shrill, high-pitched contact shrieks, chattering sequences, and alarm calls that can reach startling volume for a bird of their size. Their talking ability is moderate. Many individuals learn to clearly reproduce a limited vocabulary of words and short phrases, and some develop impressive mimicry of household sounds including ringing phones, microwave beeps, and other birds' calls. However, their speech is typically less clear and extensive than that of larger parrots such as African Greys or Amazons. Their natural calls will always be the dominant vocal output, and owners should expect regular bouts of enthusiastic shrieking, particularly at dawn, dusk, and during periods of excitement.

Children & Other Pets

Rainbow Lorikeets can coexist successfully with children in households where clear boundaries are established and interactions are always supervised. Their playful, clownish nature appeals strongly to children, and the experience of interacting with such a vivid, responsive creature can be tremendously enriching for young people developing an appreciation for animals. However, the lorikeet's sharp bill, tendency to nip during play, and sensitivity to rough handling mean that very young children, generally those under six years of age, should not handle these birds unsupervised. Even gentle, well-meaning children can inadvertently squeeze, drop, or startle a lorikeet, provoking a defensive bite that can break skin and frighten both child and bird.

Older children who are taught proper bird handling techniques, including supporting the bird's feet, reading body language cues, and respecting the bird's signals of discomfort, can develop rewarding relationships with pet lorikeets. Involving children in age-appropriate aspects of daily care, such as preparing fruit portions, offering treats during training sessions, and helping with supervised bathing, builds responsibility and deepens the bond between child and bird. The key is establishing from the outset that the lorikeet is a living animal with needs and boundaries, not a toy.

Cohabitation with other household pets requires careful management and permanent physical barriers. Cats represent a lethal threat to lorikeets regardless of the cat's apparent temperament or the bird's boldness, as a single swipe or bite can kill a bird of this size almost instantly. Even seemingly friendly interactions carry unacceptable risk, as cat saliva contains Pasteurella bacteria that are rapidly fatal to birds. Dogs vary widely in their prey drive and reliability around birds, but no dog should be trusted alone with an unsupervised lorikeet, regardless of breed or training history.

Relationships with other bird species require equally thoughtful management. Rainbow Lorikeets are assertive and territorial, and they will readily attack larger birds that encroach on their perceived territory. Conversely, larger parrots can inflict devastating injuries on a lorikeet with a single bite. Mixed-species flight aviaries can work when properly designed with adequate space, multiple feeding stations, and visual barriers, but close confinement with other parrot species is generally inadvisable. Pairs or small groups of Rainbow Lorikeets housed together typically coexist well, provided sufficient space and resources are available to prevent territorial disputes.
