The Yunnan Mountain Rat Snake belongs to the species Oreocryptophis porphyraceus, a complex of strikingly colored colubrid snakes distributed across the montane forests of East and Southeast Asia. The Yunnan population inhabits the rugged highlands of Yunnan Province in southwestern China, a region recognized globally as one of the most biodiverse temperate zones on Earth. The landscape of Yunnan, where deep river gorges cut between towering mountain ranges and dense subtropical forests transition into cool-temperate broadleaf woodlands at higher elevations, provides an ideal mosaic of habitats for a snake adapted to life in cool, humid, and heavily forested mountain terrain.
The broader species was first described scientifically by the British naturalist John Edward Gray in 1831 under the name Coluber porphyraceus, based on preserved specimens that had reached European collections through the trade networks of the colonial era. However, the taxonomic history of the species has been remarkably convoluted, reflecting both the wide geographic range of the snake and the considerable variation in color and pattern that exists among populations from different regions. Specimens from Yunnan were initially grouped with other mainland Asian populations, and it was only through subsequent decades of comparative morphological study that researchers began to appreciate the distinctiveness of the southwestern Chinese forms.

Reptile specimens collected during these expeditions contributed to the gradual scientific understanding of the Oreocryptophis porphyraceus complex, though the montane rat snakes were never as prominently featured in expedition reports as the region's more conspicuous birds and mammals.
The specific recognition of the Yunnan population as a distinct form within the species complex has undergone several revisions.
