The Western Rat Snake (Pantherophis obsoletus) is a large, nonvenomous colubrid native to a broad swath of the central and eastern United States. Its range stretches from the hardwood forests and river bluffs of eastern Texas and Oklahoma through the Ozark Plateau, across the Mississippi River valley, and into the woodlands and agricultural corridors of the upper Midwest, the Ohio Valley, and the mid-Atlantic states. The species occupies a remarkable diversity of habitats within this range, from bottomland hardwood forests and limestone karst regions to suburban woodlots and the rafters of aging barns and outbuildings, a versatility that has made it one of the most commonly encountered large snakes across much of its distribution.
The taxonomic history of the Western Rat Snake is among the most convoluted of any North American reptile. The species was originally described by the American naturalist Thomas Say in 1823 during the Long Expedition to the Rocky Mountains, an early federally sponsored survey of the western territories. Say placed the snake in the genus Coluber under the name Coluber obsoletus, working from specimens collected in the vicinity of the Missouri River. For much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the species was subsequently housed in the genus Elaphe, a large Old World genus into which many North American rat snakes were placed based on superficial morphological similarities to European and Asian species.
Molecular phylogenetic studies conducted in the late 1990s and early 2000s revolutionized the understanding of rat snake relationships. Researchers demonstrated that the North American rat snakes historically placed in Elaphe were not closely related to the Eurasian species that anchored that genus, and the New World species were transferred to the resurrected genus Pantherophis. This reclassification, though scientifically well supported, generated considerable debate within both the herpetological community and the hobbyist world, and many field guides and popular references continued to use the Elaphe designation for years afterward.
The species-level taxonomy proved equally contentious. For decades, the Western Rat Snake was treated as one of several subspecies within a single wide-ranging species, Elaphe obsoleta, alongside the Black Rat Snake, the Yellow Rat Snake, the Everglades Rat Snake, and the Texas Rat Snake. Genetic analyses eventually revealed that these putative subspecies represented a complex mosaic of populations with patterns of gene flow and isolation that did not neatly correspond to the traditional subspecific boundaries. The resulting taxonomic reorganization elevated several of these forms, including the Western Rat Snake, to full species status under Pantherophis, though the precise boundaries and relationships among the obsoletus complex taxa remain subjects of ongoing research.
