The Vietnamese Blue Beauty Snake is a regional color variant and locality form of the Beauty Rat Snake complex (Orthriophis taeniurus, formerly Elaphe taeniura), a wide-ranging colubrid species distributed across much of East and Southeast Asia. The broader species occupies an enormous geographic range stretching from southern China through Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and into parts of the Indonesian archipelago, but the Vietnamese form is distinguished by its particularly vivid blue-black dorsal coloration, which intensifies with maturity and has made it one of the most sought-after locality variants in the entire beauty snake complex.
The taxonomic history of the Beauty Rat Snake reflects the often-contested nature of colubrid classification in Asia. The species was originally described under the genus Elaphe, a large and historically heterogeneous grouping of Old World rat snakes that underwent significant revision during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Molecular phylogenetic studies conducted during the 2000s led to the reclassification of the beauty snake lineage into the genus Orthriophis, though some taxonomists have since proposed further generic rearrangement.
