Stimson's Python (Antaresia stimsoni) belongs to the genus Antaresia, a group of small pythons endemic to Australia. The species was formally described by L.A. Smith in 1985, though specimens had been collected and studied for decades prior under different classifications. The name honors A.F. Stimson, a herpetologist at the British Museum of Natural History who contributed significantly to the taxonomy of Australian reptiles during the twentieth century.
The genus Antaresia itself was erected to house the smallest pythons in the world, separating them from the broader Liasis grouping that had previously contained them. Stimson's Python was long confused with the closely related Children's Python (Antaresia childreni), and the two were often treated as a single species or as subspecies of one another. Molecular studies and careful morphological comparison eventually confirmed them as distinct species occupying different ecological niches across the Australian continent.
