The rosy boa (Lichanura trivirgata) is a small, heavy-bodied constrictor native to the arid and semi-arid regions of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Its range extends from the coastal mountains and deserts of southern California through southwestern Arizona and into the Baja California peninsula and portions of Sonora, Mexico. Within this range, the species occupies rocky desert scrublands, canyon bottoms, and boulder-strewn hillsides where it shelters in crevices and rodent burrows during the heat of the day.
The species was first formally described in the mid-nineteenth century, and its taxonomy has been subject to periodic revision as researchers examine the relationships among geographically separated populations.
