The Pine Snake (Pituophis melanoleucus) is a large, powerfully built, non-venomous colubrid native to the sandy soils and open woodlands of the eastern United States. Its range stretches from the Pine Barrens of New Jersey south through the coastal plain and Piedmont regions of the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and into portions of Tennessee and Kentucky. Throughout this range the species is strongly associated with dry, well-drained habitats — pine flatwoods, longleaf pine savannas, sandy ridges, and the globally unique Pine Barrens ecosystem of southern New Jersey, which has lent the snake one of its most enduring common names.
The species was formally described by the French-American naturalist François Marie Daudin in 1803, based on specimens collected from the southeastern United States. Daudin placed the snake in the genus Coluber before it was later transferred to Pituophis, a genus that also includes the Bullsnake and Gopher Snake of the central and western portions of the continent. The taxonomic history of the Pine Snake reflects broader debates within North American herpetology about species boundaries and the degree to which geographic variation should be recognized at the subspecific or specific level.
Historically, three subspecies of Pituophis melanoleucus have been recognized. The Northern Pine Snake (P. m. melanoleucus), found primarily in the mid-Atlantic and southeastern states, is the nominate form and the most widely known. The Florida Pine Snake (P. m. mugitus) occupies the sandy uplands of Florida, Georgia, and adjacent states, while the Black Pine Snake (P. m. lodingi) is restricted to the longleaf pine forests of southern Mississippi and Alabama. Each subspecies occupies a distinct geographic and ecological niche, but all share the characteristic large body, keeled scales, and distinctive pointed rostral scale that is a hallmark of the genus Pituophis.
Before European settlement, the Pine Snake inhabited a vast, fire-maintained landscape of open pine forests and savannas that stretched across much of the coastal plain and Piedmont of the eastern seaboard. The longleaf pine ecosystem alone once covered an estimated ninety million acres from Virginia to Texas, providing the Pine Snake with an essentially continuous expanse of suitable habitat. The subsequent loss of more than ninety-seven percent of this original longleaf pine forest represents one of the most significant habitat reductions in North American conservation history and has had profound consequences for the Pine Snake and many other species dependent on this vanishing landscape.
