Nelson's Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum nelsoni) is a strikingly patterned colubrid native to the dry tropical forests, scrublands, and semi-arid valleys of western Mexico. Its range centers on the Pacific slope states of Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Colima, and portions of Guerrero, where it inhabits rocky hillsides, agricultural margins, and open woodland from near sea level to moderate elevations in the Sierra Madre Occidental foothills. The species occupies a transitional ecological zone where tropical deciduous forest gives way to thorn scrub and grassland, and its presence across this gradient reflects a flexibility that has served the subspecies well as land use patterns in western Mexico have changed over the past several centuries.

The vivid red, black, and white or cream coloration that defines Nelson's Milk Snake made it one of the more conspicuous snake species encountered in agricultural settings and near human habitation.
