Its geographic range stretches from southern Mexico and Guatemala through Central America and across much of South America, reaching as far south as northern Argentina and Uruguay. The species was formally described by the French herpetologist Francois Marie Daudin in 1803, based on specimens collected from the Neotropical region. The common name Mussurana derives from the Tupi language, one of the major indigenous language families of Brazil. The Tupi-speaking peoples of coastal and interior Brazil were intimately familiar with the snake long before European contact, and their name for the animal passed into Brazilian Portuguese as the standard vernacular designation. This linguistic inheritance reflects the deep pre-Columbian history of human awareness of the Mussurana and underscores the fact that indigenous knowledge of this species predates Western scientific classification by many centuries.
Physically, the Mussurana undergoes one of the more striking ontogenetic color changes found among Neotropical snakes. Juveniles display a vivid coral-red or pinkish coloration with a pale collar behind the head, a pattern that bears a superficial resemblance to certain coral snake species. As the animal matures, this bright juvenile coloration gradually darkens until the adult presents a uniform glossy black or dark blue-black dorsum with a pale cream or white ventral surface. This dramatic transformation was a source of confusion for early taxonomists, who occasionally described juveniles and adults as separate species before the developmental connection was understood.
