The Milk Snake, Lampropeltis triangulum, is one of the most widely distributed snake species in the Western Hemisphere. Its range extends from southeastern Canada through much of the eastern and central United States, continuing south through Mexico and Central America into portions of northern South America. This extraordinary geographic spread has given rise to a remarkable diversity of subspecies, with over two dozen recognized forms displaying a wide range of color patterns and body sizes adapted to their local environments.

Fossil and biogeographic evidence suggests that the ancestors of modern Milk Snakes diversified across North America as the continent's landscapes changed over millions of years. Glacial advances and retreats during the Pleistocene epoch isolated populations in refugia, driving the differentiation that produced the many subspecies recognized today. As glaciers receded, these populations expanded and in some cases came back into contact, creating zones of intergradation where intermediate forms can still be found.
