The Jungle Carpet Python (Morelia spilota cheynei) is a subspecies of the widely distributed Carpet Python complex, native to the tropical and subtropical rainforests of northeastern Queensland, Australia. Its range centers on the Atherton Tablelands region, extending through pockets of dense rainforest habitat from roughly Cooktown in the north to the ranges west and south of Innisfail. This is a landscape of high rainfall, steep volcanic terrain, and towering canopy forests, an environment that has shaped the Jungle Carpet Python into one of the most strikingly patterned and arboreal members of its species complex.
The broader Carpet Python species, Morelia spilota, was first described by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacepede in 1804, based on specimens collected during early European expeditions to the Australian continent. However, the recognition of distinct subspecies within this highly variable group came much later. The Jungle Carpet Python was formally described and designated as Morelia spilota cheynei by Lachlan Wells and C. Ross Wellington in 1984, honoring the herpetologist John Cheyne for his contributions to the study of Australian pythons. This relatively late formal description reflects both the taxonomic complexity of the Carpet Python group and the difficulty of fieldwork in the rugged rainforest terrain where the Jungle form is found.
The Aboriginal peoples of the Wet Tropics region had intimate knowledge of the Jungle Carpet Python long before European naturalists documented it. The Djirri-bal, Yidinji, and other language groups whose traditional lands overlap with the subspecies' range possessed detailed understanding of its habits, preferred prey, seasonal movements, and ecological relationships within the rainforest ecosystem. This knowledge was embedded in oral traditions, hunting practices, and land management strategies that reflected thousands of years of coexistence with the species.
Distinguishing the Jungle Carpet Python from other Carpet Python populations rests on a combination of geographic isolation, habitat specialization, and a distinctive color pattern that typically features bold bands or blotches of vivid yellow or gold set against a background of jet black or very dark brown. While considerable variation exists within the subspecies, the high-contrast patterning of well-marked Jungle Carpet Pythons is unlike anything seen in the Coastal, Inland, or Diamond Carpet Python populations found elsewhere across Australia, and this visual distinctiveness has been central to the subspecies' cultural and commercial identity.
