Car transport is the most practical and commonly used method for moving Gopher Snakes, whether the trip involves a short drive to a veterinary appointment or a longer journey to a reptile expo or a new home. The foundation of safe car travel is a secure transport container that the snake cannot escape from. A rigid plastic tub with a tightly fitting, locking lid and adequate ventilation holes is the standard choice for most keepers. For larger adult Gopher Snakes, which can exceed five or six feet, the container must be spacious enough to hold the coiled animal comfortably without being so large that the snake slides around during turns and stops.
Placing the snake inside a cloth bag or pillowcase before putting it into the transport container adds an extra layer of security and helps reduce stress. Bagged snakes tend to settle quickly and remain calm during transport, as the close contact of the fabric mimics the enclosed spaces where snakes naturally rest. The bag should be tied or clipped shut securely, and the knotted end should be positioned so that the snake cannot push against it and work the closure open.
Temperature regulation during car travel deserves careful attention. Gopher Snakes tolerate a wider range of temperatures than many tropical species, but extreme heat and cold can still be dangerous. In summer, the vehicle interior should be climate controlled and the snake should never be left in a parked car, even briefly. In winter, pre-warming the vehicle and supplementing with chemical hand warmers wrapped in cloth near the container helps maintain safe temperatures. The transport container should be positioned within the passenger compartment where temperatures are most stable, not in the trunk.
For trips to reptile expos, where multiple animals may be transported simultaneously, keepers should ensure that each snake is individually contained and that containers are stacked or arranged in a way that prevents crushing, tipping, or overheating. A well-organized transport setup not only protects the animals but also reduces stress for the keeper, allowing for a smoother and more professional experience at the event.
