Garter snakes are among the more straightforward snake species to transport by car, thanks to their manageable size and generally calm temperament. A secure, well-ventilated plastic container with a tight-fitting lid is the most practical transport enclosure for car trips. The container should be large enough for the snake to stretch partially but small enough to prevent excessive sliding during turns and stops. A layer of damp paper towel or sphagnum moss provides both cushioning and the moisture that garter snakes appreciate.
Temperature management during car travel is the single most important safety consideration. Garter snakes tolerate a temperature range of roughly 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during transport, but exposure to extreme heat or cold can be rapidly fatal. The transport container should be positioned away from direct sunlight, heated seats, and air conditioning vents. On the floor of the vehicle behind a front seat is often the most temperature-stable location. In warm weather, never leave a garter snake unattended in a parked vehicle, as interior temperatures can reach dangerous levels within minutes.
Garter snakes are more active than many snake species and may attempt to explore their container vigorously during transport. Ensuring that the lid is truly secure is essential, as even small gaps can allow a determined garter snake to escape into the vehicle's interior. Containers with locking clips or screw-on lids are preferable to those with simple press-fit lids. If the container has ventilation holes, these should be small enough to prevent the snake from pushing through, particularly for juvenile animals.
For longer road trips, the snake should be checked periodically during rest stops to ensure the substrate remains moist and the animal appears unstressed. Signs of stress in garter snakes include persistent attempts to escape, rapid breathing, and musking, the release of a pungent secretion from the cloacal glands. While some musking during initial handling and placement in the container is normal, persistent distress signals warrant a review of transport conditions. Offering a small water dish during extended stops allows the snake to drink and helps maintain hydration.
