The Striped Skunk, Mephitis mephitis, is one of the most widely recognized mammals native to North America. Its range extends from southern Canada through the continental United States and into northern Mexico, encompassing an extraordinary variety of habitats including deciduous and mixed forests, grasslands, agricultural margins, suburban neighborhoods, and semi-arid scrublands. This geographic breadth reflects the species' remarkable ecological flexibility, an adaptability that has shaped both its evolutionary success and its long, complicated history of interactions with human communities across the continent.
The genus Mephitis belongs to the family Mephitidae, which was historically classified within the broader family Mustelidae alongside weasels, otters, and badgers. Molecular phylogenetic studies conducted in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries revealed that skunks represent a distinct evolutionary lineage warranting their own family-level classification. The family Mephitidae now includes four genera — Mephitis, Spilogale, Conepatus, and Mydaus — with fossil evidence suggesting that the lineage diverged from other carnivore families during the late Miocene, roughly ten to twelve million years ago. Within this family, the Striped Skunk is the most widespread and abundant species, a generalist thriving alongside human development while some of its relatives have experienced significant range contractions.
The Striped Skunk's most defining characteristic — its potent chemical defense — is produced by a pair of highly developed anal scent glands capable of projecting a sulfur-containing thiol compound with remarkable accuracy at distances of up to fifteen feet. This defensive mechanism is among the most effective in the animal kingdom and has profoundly influenced every aspect of the species' relationship with humans throughout history. The chemical composition of skunk spray, primarily consisting of thiols and thioacetates, produces an intensely pungent odor that can cause temporary blindness and nausea in targets, serving as a near-perfect deterrent against predation by mammals.
Beyond their famous defensive spray, Striped Skunks possess a suite of physical and behavioral adaptations that have contributed to their ecological success. Their stout, muscular build and powerful forelimbs with long claws make them proficient diggers capable of excavating insect larvae, grubs, and ground-nesting prey. Their omnivorous diet allows them to exploit seasonally available food sources with remarkable efficiency, shifting from insect-heavy fare in spring and summer to fruits, seeds, and scavenged material in autumn and winter. This dietary flexibility, combined with their ability to enter a state of torpor during severe winter weather, enables the species to persist across climate zones that would exclude more specialized feeders.
