Choosing an appropriate travel carrier is the foundation of safe Spiny Mouse transport. The ideal carrier must balance security, ventilation, visibility, and stress reduction while being practical for the specific mode of transport being used. For spiny mice, the most critical carrier characteristic is escape-proof construction: these animals are agile, surprisingly strong for their size, and capable of squeezing through gaps that appear far too small to accommodate their bodies. Any carrier with bar spacing wider than a quarter of an inch, loose-fitting lids, or unsecured openings is unsuitable for spiny mouse transport.
Hard-sided small-animal carriers made from durable plastic with secure locking mechanisms and ventilation slots are generally the safest choice for transporting spiny mice. These carriers resist chewing, maintain their structural integrity under pressure, and provide protection against crushing in the event that luggage or other items shift during transport. The ventilation openings should be small enough to prevent escape but numerous enough to ensure adequate airflow, particularly during warm-weather travel. Carriers designed for hamsters or small reptiles often meet these requirements, though keepers should inspect any carrier carefully before use to verify that all closures are fully secure and that no gaps exist at seams or hinge points.
The interior of the travel carrier should be prepared to minimize stress and provide basic comfort during the journey. A layer of familiar bedding material from the animals' home enclosure provides olfactory comfort and absorbs moisture. A small, stable hide — a cardboard tube, a section of PVC pipe, or a commercially available small-animal shelter — gives the animals a place to retreat and feel secure. For trips longer than a few hours, a small dish of dry food such as seeds and pellets should be secured to the carrier floor, along with a piece of water-rich produce like cucumber or seedless watermelon to provide hydration without the risk of water bottle leakage. Open water dishes should be avoided during transport as they inevitably spill, soaking bedding and creating humidity that can stress desert-adapted animals.
When transporting social groups, it is important to keep established colony members together in the same carrier rather than separating them. Spiny mice are highly social animals that derive significant comfort from the presence of familiar companions, and separation during the already stressful experience of transport can compound anxiety and lead to behavioral problems upon arrival. If the colony is too large for a single carrier, it should be divided into sub-groups that already have established social bonds rather than randomly sorted. Each sub-group should receive its own hide and food provisions within its carrier.
