Skunks belong to the family Mephitidae, a group of small to medium-sized mammals found exclusively in the Americas. The striped skunk, Mephitis mephitis, is the species most commonly kept as a pet and the one that has undergone the most extensive selective breeding for the domestic market. In the wild, striped skunks range across most of North America, from southern Canada through the United States and into northern Mexico, thriving in a variety of habitats from forests and grasslands to suburban neighborhoods.
The skunk's most famous feature — its ability to spray a pungent, sulfur-based liquid from glands near the base of the tail — is a defense mechanism that has shaped human attitudes toward the species for centuries.
