The domestic ferret, Mustela putorius furo, is believed to have been domesticated from the European polecat, Mustela putorius, at least two thousand years ago, with some estimates placing the earliest domestication events as far back as 2500 BCE. The precise time and location of initial domestication remain subjects of scholarly debate, but the preponderance of historical and genetic evidence points to the Mediterranean basin — particularly regions of modern-day Greece, Egypt, and the Iberian Peninsula — as the likely cradle of the human-ferret relationship. Unlike many domesticated species that were selected primarily for food production, the ferret was valued from its earliest association with humans as a working animal, prized for its slender body, relentless energy, and instinctive drive to pursue prey into underground burrows.
The practice known as ferreting — using trained ferrets to flush rabbits and other burrowing animals from their warrens — was the principal motivation behind domestication and remained the ferret's primary economic role for millennia. Ancient writers made reference to small, weasel-like animals kept for pest control and rabbit hunting, though distinguishing ferrets from other mustelids in these early accounts is not always straightforward. The Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder described animals that were likely ferrets being sent into rabbit burrows in the Balearic Islands, and Strabo recorded similar practices in Libya. These accounts suggest that ferreting was already a well-established tradition by the classical period, indicating that domestication must have occurred considerably earlier.
Genetic studies conducted in the early twenty-first century have confirmed that the domestic ferret descends from European polecat populations rather than from the steppe polecat or any other mustelid species. Mitochondrial DNA analysis reveals relatively low genetic diversity in domestic ferrets compared to their wild ancestors, consistent with a domestication bottleneck in which a small founding population gave rise to the entire domestic lineage. This genetic evidence, combined with the archaeological record, supports the hypothesis that ferret domestication was a deliberate, localized event rather than a gradual process occurring independently across multiple regions.
The sable coloration — characterized by a warm brown guard coat over a cream or golden undercoat, with a dark mask across the eyes and darker points on the legs and tail — closely resembles the natural pelage of the wild European polecat. This resemblance is not coincidental. The sable pattern represents the ancestral color phenotype of the domestic ferret, the coloration that was carried forward from the wild population through the domestication process. While selective breeding in later centuries would produce a wide range of color varieties including albino, silver, champagne, chocolate, and various patterned forms, the sable remained the default and most common coloration throughout the long history of ferret keeping.
