The raccoon, Procyon lotor, is a medium-sized mammal belonging to the family Procyonidae, a group of New World carnivores that also includes coatis, kinkajous, and olingos. The species evolved in the tropical and subtropical forests of Central America before expanding northward into what is now the United States and southern Canada over the course of several million years. Fossil evidence places the earliest recognizable Procyon species in the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene epochs, roughly two to five million years ago, with the modern raccoon emerging as a distinct species during the Pleistocene glaciations that repeatedly reshaped North American ecosystems.
The raccoon's native range historically encompassed most of North America south of the boreal forest line, from southern Canada through the continental United States and into Mexico and Central America. Within this vast territory, raccoons occupied an extraordinary diversity of habitats: hardwood and mixed forests, riparian corridors along rivers and streams, coastal marshes, swamps, and prairie margins. Their preference for areas near water reflects the species' foraging ecology, as crayfish, freshwater mussels, amphibians, and fish constitute important components of the natural diet. However, the raccoon's dietary flexibility and behavioral adaptability have allowed it to thrive in virtually every terrestrial habitat within its range, including arid regions where water sources are intermittent.
The species displays notable geographic variation across its range. Northern raccoons tend to be substantially larger than their southern counterparts, following Bergmann's rule — a biogeographic pattern in which body size increases with latitude as a thermoregulatory adaptation to colder climates. Adult males in the northern United States and Canada commonly weigh fifteen to twenty-three pounds, while raccoons in the Florida Keys and Central America may weigh as little as six to eight pounds. Coat color and density also vary, with northern populations typically sporting thicker, more luxuriant pelage than those in warmer regions. These regional differences historically led taxonomists to describe numerous subspecies, with as many as twenty-five subspecies proposed at various points, though modern molecular analyses suggest that much of this variation represents clinal gradients rather than distinct evolutionary lineages.
The raccoon's remarkable success as a species is attributable in large part to its cognitive abilities and manual dexterity. The forepaws of the raccoon are equipped with five long, flexible digits that function almost like a primate hand, allowing the animal to manipulate objects, open containers, turn doorknobs, and probe crevices with extraordinary precision. This dexterity, combined with a high encephalization quotient — a measure of brain size relative to body size that in raccoons approaches that of some primates — has enabled the species to solve complex foraging problems, remember solutions for extended periods, and adapt rapidly to novel environments and food sources.
