The Persian Desert Jird, Meriones persicus, is a member of the subfamily Gerbillinae within the family Muridae, a large and diverse group of rodents that includes gerbils, jirds, and sand rats. The species is native to a broad swath of southwestern and central Asia, with its range extending from eastern Turkey and the Caucasus region through Iran and into Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and portions of western China. This distribution encompasses some of the most geologically and climatically varied terrain on the Asian continent, from the rocky foothills of the Zagros and Alborz mountain ranges to the vast gravel deserts and semi-arid steppe of the Iranian Plateau and the Karakum basin.
Within this range, the Persian Desert Jird occupies habitats characterized by low to moderate precipitation, sparse vegetation, and substrates suitable for the construction of extensive burrow systems. Unlike some gerbilline species that are restricted to soft sandy deserts, Meriones persicus shows a marked preference for hard clay, loess, and rocky soils where it excavates complex, multi-chambered burrows that serve as refuges from temperature extremes and predators. These burrow systems may extend more than a meter underground and include separate chambers for nesting, food storage, and waste, reflecting a high degree of behavioral sophistication in subterranean architecture.
The ecological role of the Persian Desert Jird within its native range is significant. As a primary consumer of seeds, roots, and dry vegetation, it participates directly in nutrient cycling and seed dispersal across arid ecosystems. Its burrowing activity aerates compacted soils and creates microhabitats exploited by invertebrates, reptiles, and other small mammals. The species also serves as a critical prey item for a wide array of predators, including raptors such as the long-legged buzzard and the eagle owl, mammalian carnivores including foxes and wildcats, and various snake species. The removal or decline of jird populations can trigger cascading effects throughout these food webs.
The geographic range of Meriones persicus overlaps with several closely related jird species, including Meriones libycus, Meriones tristrami, and Meriones meridianus, creating complex patterns of sympatry that have long challenged field biologists attempting to delineate species boundaries. In zones of overlap, these species often partition habitat by substrate preference, elevation, or vegetation type, reducing direct competition. The Persian Desert Jird tends to dominate in foothill and piedmont environments at moderate elevations, while other Meriones species may prevail in lowland sandy deserts or agricultural margins.
