The Long-Eared Desert Hedgehog, Hemiechinus auritus, is native to one of the broadest geographic ranges of any hedgehog species, extending from the coastal deserts of North Africa through the Middle East and Central Asia to the steppes of Mongolia and northwestern China. This enormous distribution encompasses an extraordinary variety of arid and semi-arid landscapes, including sandy deserts, rocky wadis, clay flats, scrubby foothills, and the fringes of irrigated agricultural land. Throughout this range, the species gravitates toward habitats where loose, diggable substrate permits the construction of shallow burrows and where insect prey remains available during the warm months of the year.
The genus Hemiechinus belongs to the subfamily Erinaceinae within the family Erinaceidae, the true hedgehogs. Fossil evidence places the ancestors of modern hedgehogs among the earliest placental mammals to diversify after the end-Cretaceous extinction event, roughly sixty-five million years ago. The lineage that gave rise to Hemiechinus is believed to have diverged from other erinaceid genera during the Miocene epoch, between ten and twenty million years ago, as the progressive aridification of Central Asia and North Africa created expanding tracts of open, dry habitat that favored small, burrowing insectivores with efficient water-conservation physiology.
The species' most conspicuous physical trait — its disproportionately large ears, which can measure nearly half the length of the head — is a direct adaptation to life in extreme heat. These oversized pinnae are richly supplied with blood vessels close to the skin surface, allowing the hedgehog to dissipate excess body heat through vascular radiation in much the same way that the fennec fox uses its large ears in Saharan environments. This thermoregulatory mechanism supplements the hedgehog's behavioral strategies for coping with desert temperatures, which include strict nocturnality during summer, extended periods of torpor during the hottest daylight hours, and the ability to enter a shallow hibernation or aestivation when environmental conditions become untenable.
Across its range, the Long-Eared Desert Hedgehog occupies a consistent ecological niche as a ground-dwelling nocturnal insectivore. It feeds primarily on beetles, moth larvae, earwigs, centipedes, scorpions, and other invertebrates, supplementing this diet with occasional small vertebrates such as lizards or rodent pups and with seasonal plant material including fallen fruits and seeds. Its foraging behavior is largely solitary, with individuals covering considerable distances each night along well-established routes through their home territory. Population densities tend to be low compared to those of hedgehog species in more temperate, resource-rich environments, reflecting the inherent constraints of desert ecosystems on vertebrate biomass.
