Despite its common name suggesting a relationship to bears, the Honey Bear is not a member of the family Ursidae and shares no close phylogenetic kinship with any bear species. The name arose from the animal's rounded ears, stocky build, and well-documented fondness for honey and sweet nectar, features that early European observers interpreted through the visual lens of their familiarity with Old World bears. This misnomer has persisted for centuries and continues to define the animal's identity in the popular imagination.
The species ranges across a broad swath of Neotropical forest from southern Mexico through Central America and into the Amazon Basin, the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, and portions of Bolivia, reaching as far south as the Mato Grosso. Within this extensive distribution, the Honey Bear occupies lowland and montane tropical rainforest, semi-deciduous forest, and secondary-growth woodlands, showing a preference for continuous canopy cover that supports its almost exclusively arboreal lifestyle. It rarely descends to the forest floor under natural conditions, navigating the upper and middle canopy using its prehensile tail, a feature unique among the Procyonidae and relatively uncommon among carnivorans as a whole.

The evolutionary history of Procyonidae places the divergence of the Honey Bear lineage from its closest living relatives, the olingos of the genus Bassaricyon, at approximately twenty-two to twenty-four million years ago during the early Miocene. This deep divergence underscores the Honey Bear's long independent evolutionary trajectory and helps explain the suite of specialized adaptations it possesses, including its prehensile tail, elongated and extrudable tongue adapted for extracting nectar from deep-throated flowers, and its exclusively nocturnal activity pattern. Fossil evidence for the genus Potos is sparse, which is typical for arboreal tropical mammals whose remains rarely enter depositional environments conducive to fossilization.
