The Campbell's dwarf hamster (Phodopus campbelli) is native to the arid steppes and semi-desert regions of Central Asia, spanning parts of Mongolia, northern China, and southern Russia. These small rodents evolved to survive in environments with extreme temperature swings, burrowing into sandy or loamy soil to create elaborate underground tunnel systems. Their natural habitat consists of sparse grasslands and scrubland where they forage for seeds, grains, and the occasional insect.
The species was first formally documented by Western science in 1902, when W.C. Campbell collected specimens during an expedition to the Tuva region of what is now southern Russia. The hamster was subsequently named in his honor by the British zoologist Oldfield Thomas, who classified it as a distinct species within the genus Phodopus. For decades after its initial description, the Campbell's dwarf hamster remained largely a subject of academic interest, studied primarily by zoologists examining rodent taxonomy in Central Asian ecosystems.
It was not until the mid-twentieth century that living specimens began to be kept in laboratory settings in Europe and the Soviet Union. Researchers were drawn to the species because of its small size, relatively short gestation period, and ease of maintenance in captivity. These early captive populations would eventually form the genetic foundation for the pet trade that emerged in the following decades.
The transition from laboratory animal to household pet began in earnest during the 1970s and 1980s, when breeders in the United Kingdom and continental Europe recognized the appeal of these tiny, personable hamsters. Their manageable size, endearing behavior, and capacity for social interaction distinguished them from the larger and more solitary Syrian hamster that had dominated the pet market since the 1940s.
